I did my best to celebrate Saturnalia in a safe and family-friendly manner but I must confess I felt a tad unfulfilled by the end. The worst of it was yesterday, the Sigillaria or Day of Gift-Giving. I went down to Bergdorf Goodman looking for a slave to give my friend Quintillus but there wasn’t a single one left in stock. I wound up giving him a toothpick, with which, in fact, he was much pleased. As the Sigillaria was also a day to attach a snatch of terrible verse to your gift, I’ll take advantage of your wonderful online parking garage here to share this wonderful verse from Amanda McKittrick Ros, the worst poet’s worst poet. It’s from her “Visiting Westminster Abbey”, where one of my own forebears is interred:

    Holy Moses! Take a look!
    Flesh decayed in every nook!
Some rare bits of brain lie here,
Mortal loads of beef and beer.

May you leap safely into 2014.

That’s not bad poetry at all; it’s lively and surprising. Bergdorf Goodman no longer stocks slaves, but does carry merchandise made by slave labor. And thanks; I hope your 2014 is safe as well.
