Great quote! Mr. Hapgood was also really good friends with the writer and music critic Carl Van Vechten, who I’m a great fan of. Mr. Hapgood and his “wife” Neith appear often in Carl Van Vechten’s diaries during “The Spendid Drunken Twenties”.

I found that quote in Allen Churchill’s book on Greenwich Village, “The Improper Bohemians,” which I recommend.
