This week brings you a bold design from “Spinner Fun Game,” an undated game from Built-Rite. 29c got you a spinner, 20 cards (showing a cowboy, a cowgirl, an Indian, a scarecrow, and a clown), and the promise that it’s “fun to do.”

This image points out to children that the world isn’t always what it seems to be: I thought scarecrows were supposed to scare birds away….. This image reminds me of an actual scene I witnessed in my neighborhood pet shop as a child, while wandering home after a Jerry Lewis movie. I stood on tip toes and peered into a glass rectangular tank. There I saw a snake, curled up having a snooze with a little mouse cosily snuggled up to it having a rest as well.

I can see the scary side of this image, too- especially the sharp pointy ends of the arms and torso. And there’s something subtly violent about the stick and the flowers. The stitched mouth reminds me of Boris Karloff in Frankenstein.
But I do like the little friendly bird.

The scarecrow, then, seems to scare people rather than birds. Perhaps a “scarechild” is just the thing to keep children out of your yard.
Of course, the red bird is not a crow; it could be that crows are closer to children than red birds in that respect.
The snake and mouse sound cozy. Dogs and humans snuggle, but they too will eat one another if they get hungry.

I wonder what the spinner was for.

“Players in turn spin the spinner. If they have a card in their hand that corresponds with the object spun on the spinner, they may discard it and any duplicate cards. First player ‘OUT OF CARDS’ wins the game.”
