“Makin’ Groceries” was published in New Orleans in 1987, by Mel-Mar Productions. All of the cards represent local brands of food: ice cream, crab boil, red beans, potato chips, etc. The players compete to match and accumulate groceries. As the instruction card says, “We have chosen some of Louisiana’s finest and most original food products that best typify the unique quality and character of the State’s prominent food industry.” It’s essentially a collection of ads; but I like its cheerful regionalism and oddball art.

I can’t believe that dates back only to 1987. The beignets are probably the most wholesome food depicted.

Aw shucks……SSSSSOOOOOOO cute! I like MR. Beignet’s bow tied belt around his crunchy chubby butter-fried belly. He’s very festive and life-loving with that powdered sugar can. I’d love to see the crab boil and I’m a fan of drawings of ice cream! Thanks!

I am the person that invented and printed and distributed this card game back in 1987. I am considering bringing it back to market by poplular demand.

Melissa- we just dug up our frayed and torn copy of your card game and introduced it to my 4 year old daughter. She loved it and we had a wonderful time playing. I really hope you print them again and don’t change a thing. We live in CA and your game is a wonderful way of keeping the NOLA alive in our hearts.

I would like to find a deck of “Makin’ Groceries” for my grandkids living in Houston. We played it with our kids while going on vacations. Anyone know where I can purchase a deck?

I used to play this game as a child with my mother and siblings. We would all act like we were going to a picnic and the matches we had in the end would be what we bought to the pinic. There were five of us, this way none of us were left out. My mothers copy was ruined in the flood a few years ago, but I would love to be able to play this game again. I think my children would enjoy it just as much as my siblings and I did when were younger.

I am the artist of this cute little card game. It is so great to read your comments. People really do seem to enjoy the cards. I am glad that Melissa and Meg want to bring it back! Thank you for your comments.

Dianne — How nice to hear from you! I’ve been posting this series of card games in appreciation of the lovely work done by mostly anonymous artists; it’s a treat to be able to give credit. Take a bow! And I do hope you can release it again; people obviously like it.
