I didn’t know that the Illinois State Department of Health issued cartoons; this one is striking. I found it in a 1928 book called Safe Counsel, by B. G. Jefferis and J. L. Nichols. Don’t be like this man!

This is wonderful! I wish more departments of health had a healthy sense of humor.

I figured the word “Idiac” sprang from Doug’s brain. Who’d a thunk such cleverness lurked in the bowels of the state bureaucracy. Guess it really was the “Roaring Twenties.”

I guess “idiac” is a portmanteau of “idiot” and “zodiac”; but googling reveals it’s also a combo of “idiot” and “maniac,” as well as a number of acronyms. A versatile word!
