And each of those cards, as you can see, offers a variety of fortune telling options, framing that searching gaze. The box is even busier, a sort of carnival poster in miniature.

So the Lucky Number is 876? I’m trying to think of some precise situations in which Ingalls thought this number might be effective. Being asked one’s shirt collar size? How many children one has? The square footage of the perfect downtown stable for a dromedary? The first three numbers of the social security number of one’s future spouse? Nope. Can’t think.

It refers to the numbers racket, in which players bet on three digit numbers. I’m afraid it’s about gambling…
