I found these drawings at the flea market. They’re all 4 3/4″ x 6 1/2″, done with ink and shading film on board, and unsigned. Enjoy them.

These are wonderful – even better for their mysterious provenance.

They were obviously drawn for a specific context, but with that gone, they’re puzzling. Some of the other drawings with them are optical illusions; so my guess is that they have something to do with that.

Aha! I did a bit of searching, and found that the hole in the hand is a classic illusion. Hold your left hand in front of your left eye, and look through a cardboard tube with your right eye.

Perhaps the other cards are different, but it’s striking that all of these cards, aside from the holey hand, feature images drawn on one half of the face of the card. Could they all be intended to function as part of some sort of optical illusion involving focus on halves of visual fields….?

Could be. Or maybe the artist just left room for a text?
