We have another circus-themed edition of “Old Maid,” this time in an undated deck from Whitman. Quite the breezy design, isn’t it? And here’s the Old Maid.

I like her outfir – particularly the hat! She looks like she could get along well with our girlish red-head Old maid – I picture them having fun together on outings – maybe getting a bit tipsy!

I meant outfit – maybe this red-head is a bit tipsy.

The Jolly Juggler, or JJ s we call him at the club, is refreshing. His balls do not spell out ROYGBIB as so many multi-colored things do. It’s as though the illustrators all have OCD and have to find some arbitrary organization for their color scheme. I was so relieved not to see Roy G Bib!

Both of these characters are very active. The Juggler looks very “designed for women”, like he could’ve been on a makeup or floor cleaning powder package. The old Maid is ready to throw her head back (see those petals flying off) and wriggle herself out of that heart shaped blue outfit. She’s containing herself with her one hand tightly held over the other. But probably not for long….she looks like she has a plan.
