Fortune Telling Cards (6)

July 24th, 2013 · 5 Comments

Harry Ingalls, “the greatest fortune teller in the world,” made the unusual choice to put his portrait on each card in his deck.  And each of those cards, as you can see, offers a variety of fortune telling options, framing that searching gaze.  The box is even busier, a sort of carnival poster in miniature.

So the Lucky Number is 876? I’m trying to think of some precise situations in which Ingalls thought this number might be effective. Being asked one’s shirt collar size? How many children one has? The square footage of the perfect downtown stable for a dromedary? The first three numbers of the social security number of one’s future spouse? Nope. Can’t think.

It refers to the numbers racket, in which players bet on three digit numbers. I’m afraid it’s about gambling…

I’m at motel 666, in room # 876. What does that mean?
