The New Pope

April 4th, 2013 · 8 Comments

The new pope, Francis, has enjoyed extensive press coverage, but it must be pointed out that he is not the only one in the game.  This flyer was handed to me today, presumably by the other pope herself.  I wish her well; it’s not an easy job, and Francis has a head start.  (Please click for legibility.)

She talks the talk, but can she walk the walk?

How lucky that this flyer was handed to you. How many flyers over the course of history, flyers that may have contained multitudes of insight and import, have gone wanting of notice, doomed to oblivion, unexamined and unappreciated? Flyers formed of ephemera, announcing female popes or public hearings to renew sidewalk seating for a mediocre downtown restaurant. Is it literature, I can’t help but wonder.

Francis has been praised as humble; but I didn’t see him passing out flyers in midtown to announce his election. Literature or not, I admire her initiative.

This is why I miss Manhattan. The only flyers we see are for lawn care by ex-cons. I have quite a collection, but they pale in comparison to broadsides from the Popette.

Print some! If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem!

    For Pope Ana:

I want a Pope, just like the Pope that baptized dear old Dad.
She was a gem and the only femme that Daddy ever had,
A good old fashioned Pope with heart so true,
One who loves everyone the choirboys and you,
I want a Pope, just like the Pope that baptized dear old Dad.
