In 1953, the Albany Times-Union published a set of “Lucky Safety Cards.”  If you got the right number, you won $5000, which I suppose taught children about the numbers racket.  Hans and Fritz were probably not the best spokesmen for safety and obedience.

    What a weird combination of drawing styles –
    I guess to highlight the difference between naughty German rule breakers and good little American girls and boys?

    It’s jarring, isn’t it? Other cards show cartoony characters like Snuffy Smith and Little Iodine preaching to blandly drawn children. Come to think of it, those two aren’t the best role models, either.
